Stingray nightclub is a monthly nightclub run by volunteer members from My Life My Choice especially for adults with a learning disability. We think Stingray is a great opportunity to meet new people, have fun and gain confidence; but you don’t have to take our word for it, our members think it’s great too!!!

One Anonymous person said “I like seeing my friends.” and Louise said that it is great because “you get to meet new people”. Another anonymous person said, “It’s a good place to hang out with friends and meet new people. It’s good to get you out of the house if you’re bored.”

Mark said “I like meeting new people” and Adam said, “I like the music and I’ve liked meeting more people, meeting more friends and socialising”.

Katie Harrison, who has been coming to Stingray for several months and who travel buddies other people from Mates’n’Dates to Stingray said that “I love the atmosphere, I love meeting new people, and I love the music; I love everything about it. I love the safety of it as well because it’s very secure, very safe, and there’s always people around who we can talk to if there’s any problems.”

Katie also said “definitely come because it prevents you from feeling lonely, it gives you company if you were feeling lonely, you meet new people, and you just have a great time here”.

Stingray Nightclub was set up many years ago to provide a safe and fun environment for people with learning disabilities. Paul Scarrott, one of the people who helped set it up, said that Stingray is amazing because “It’s getting people out from the community into a night club in a safe environment; it’s all friendly and people enjoy themselves. If you go to a proper night club it is daunting.”

Paul also said “It’s so easy; we welcome anybody with learning disabilities. It’s a special night club for one night only once a month for people to come and enjoy themselves in their own environment.”

Stingray takes place once a month on a Tuesday from 6:30pm to 9.30pm, entry is £5 and carers go free. Stingray club happens at The Plush Lounge, 27 Park End Street, Oxford, OX1 1HU and is easy to get to by public transport or by car.

The next Stingray Nightclub will be on Tuesday 28 August, so take Shane’s advice and “Come along and enjoy yourself”!
