Rebecca is 28 years old and volunteers at a local florist once a week.
She found out about Travel Buddy when some of the My Life My Choice Travel Buddy Trainers attended her day service and gave a presentation about it. After the presentation, Rebecca approached them to find out more and asked when she could start.
When we first met Rebecca she made it clear that she was very keen on learning additional skills and becoming more independent. She told us that she felt quite nervous about the prospect of being on her own and said she was afraid of getting lost.
Rebecca has now learnt the journey to her volunteer job with her Travel Buddy Trainer, Dean. They have developed a good friendship.
Rebecca’s mum has said that her confidence is growing all the time and her friends at the day service have noticed too that she is less anxious. Up until now, Rebecca has relied on her support workers or Mum to drive her to her volunteer job and to the other places she likes to go to.
Rebecca is now learning the bus journey to the My Life My Choice self-advocacy group. Rebecca has said that the group has given her more confidence about meeting new people and a chance to talk about the things that are important to her.
Rebecca says: “I feel so confident now and less anxious about going on buses and travelling on my own.”
Dean says: “I feel really important when I work as a Travel Buddy Trainer.”
